The Front Desk, by Kelly Yang

The Front Desk paints a picture of the life of a young Chinese immigrant in the early 1990s. Mia lives with her parents in a California Motel. She is a ten year old that acts like an adult and loves her job of running the front desk of the motel after school. She makes a difference in the lives of the hotel customers and other visiting immigrants through the heartfelt letters she writes to them or on their behalf. The events in the story are based on some real-life experiences of the author.
